AAP to Oppose TRAI Bill

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party said it will oppose in the Lok Sabha a Bill to amend TRAI Act which seeks to remove a legal hurdle in the appointment of former TRAI chairman Nripendra Misra as principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A senior AAP leader said that the party will oppose the measure as it will "destroy" the neutrality of the telecom regulator.

"The ordinance earlier issued in this connection was also unethical," the leader said.

The TRAI Bill, which seeks to replace the ordinance, was introduced in the House amid uproar this afternoon. BJP has issued a whip to its members to support the Bill.

Before the ordinance was promulgated, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Act prohibited its chairman and members from taking up any other job in the central or state governments after demitting office.
