SC Stays Death Sentence of Delhi Gangrape Convicts

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Monday stayed the death sentence of two convicts in the Delhi gangrape case. Four men, Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan and Akshay Thakur, were convicted of raping and killing a young student in Delhi on December 16, 2012.  The apex court stayed the death sentence of Akshay and Vinay to hear their appeal.

The Delhi High Court had confirmed the death sentence in March. While a juvenile was sentenced to three years in a detention centre, one of the men six men was found dead in Tihar jail.

The Delhi gangrape case had attracted international attention, when the 23-year-old student and her male friend were attacked by six men after they boarded a private bus on the way home. The young woman was mortally injured and died two weeks later.
