'Sonrise Sounded Congress Death Knell'

Talking to reporters, Azam said that despite having been in active politics for more than a decade, Rahul didn’t know even how to give a speech, while questioning the Congress scion’s  political credentials.

BHOPAL: Senior Congress leader and former Member of Parliament, Gufaran-E-Azam on Monday hit out at Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, accusing her of ignoring the interests of the country and the party for the sake of securing  the political future of her son Rahul Gandhi.

Talking to reporters, Azam said that despite having been in active politics for more than a decade, Rahul didn’t know even how to give a speech, while questioning the Congress scion’s  political credentials.

The veteran leader said he had warned that the party was going to be decimated in the general elections if corrective measures were not initiated. “Narendra Modi’s prediction that he will crush the Congress came true. Despite my warnings, the party did not see it coming,”  Azam added.

Disclosing that he had also written a letter to Sonia on the matter, the veteran Congressman said the party workers were tired of the way the party was being run.

“Hum thak gaye sun sun ke, koi use pappu bolta hai, koi munna bolta hai, sharam aati hai (We are tired of hearing people addressing the Congress vice-president as ‘Pappu’ and ‘Munna’ and feel ashamed),” he said.

Azam, who has been a Congress MP in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, said the Congress scion had turned the party into a   lab for carrying out political experiments, leading to its destruction.  “Parents try to make sure that their children become doctors or engineers. But despite their best efforts, sometimes the children are not able to become doctors or engineers. For 10 years, you tried to make Rahul a politician but still he is not able to give a speech nor has he developed any political acumen,” he stated in the letter addressed to the Congress chief.

According to Azam, there was a need to hold elections for all the posts in the party organisation, right up to the post of the party president. “I have been writing to you regularly, but there has been no response from your side. Sycophants are ruling the roost in the party and in MP the party is being run by four-five individuals.  The party workers believe that internal elections must be held for every post, including the post of party president,”he said.
