JALANDHAR: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today said there was no supply of drugs from his state to Punjab and that his government is ready to extend full support to the neighbouring state in dealing with the menace.

"The people who are levelling such allegations have misconceptions. The charge that drugs are supplied to Punjab from Himachal is baseless. There are no drug manufacturers or smugglers there," he said at an event here.

He said his government has directed the police to deal strictly with those found involved in drug trafficking.

The Chief Minister said Himachal Pradesh government is ready to extend full support to Punjab in dealing with the drug menace as any thing that happens there, good or bad, affects his state.

"The drug problem in Punjab has not come from outside.

Drugs are available there outside schools and colleges and in colonies. No drug racket can be run without political patronage," he alleged.

He urged the Punjab government to keep a strict vigil on drug trafficking and said political will of both the states is necessary to nab the peddlers and check the menace in the region.

Singh's remarks came after former IPS officer Kiran Bedi and some Punjab leaders, at the event, said that drugs are manufactured in Himachal Pradesh.

"Political leaders especially need to work to deal with the drug menace. Drug tablets are manufactured in Himachal Pradesh and supplied everywhere from there. Why don't the Himachal Pradesh government close such factories," Bedi had said.

She suggested a "Six P" formula to solve the problem.

"If parents, principals, panchayats, politicians, police and press come together, the problem of drugs can be solved," Bedi said.

The Chief Minister also attacked BJP leader Anurag Thakur, alleging that he has no respect for the state from where he has been elected to the Lok Sabha.

It was shocking to hear from Thakur that he has spent 30 years of life in Central Town in Jalandhar and he belongs to this part of Punjab.

This is a betrayal of the trust of the people of Himachal as during elections, Thakur portrays himself as a Himachali and today he says that he is from Punjab.
