Cong Leaders to Give Robust Response to Opp Campaign: Sharma

Projecting the 2014 Lok Sabha polls as a "battle of ideologies", Congress today said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will criss cross the country to give a "robust" response to the Opposition's campaign against UPA.

"Congress is neither scared, nor it can be intimidated or is weak... Congress is ready for the battle. We are the last one to vacate the space... We are are the largest pan India political party. We have seen many ups and downs," party spokesperson Anand Sharma told reporters here.

The Union Commerce Minister was responding to questions whether the party has given up the fight even before the elections as senior leaders are shying away from contesting and many old leaders are deserting the party.

Accusing BJP of pursuing a policy of "majoritarianism" and carrying out personality politics, he said the main Opposition party has "vitiated" the political discourse under a strategy to put every decision taken by the government under question mark and "drown the truth into the noise of allegations".

"I can confirm that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will campaign, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi will campaign and all the senior leaders, who are part of the national campaign team will criss cross this country, campaign and give a message and also counter what our opponents have been doing to to us. I can assure of a very robust response," he said.

Sharma said the UPA government provided 10 years of stability in governance and despite worldwide economic crisis, India is among the first countries to have bounced back to a growth trajectory.

Regarding allegations of corruption that rocked the UPA government, he said that scam is a word that should be used when there is a proven pecuniary gain.
