TN’s first supercritical power unit in Udangudi

The first unit of the project is expected to commence from March, 2012 and the second in September 2012.

CHENNAI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) on Wednesday signed an agreement for floating a joint venture company by the name Udangudi Power Corporation Limited, for settting up the first supercritical power project (1,600 mw) in Tamil Nadu.

The agreement for the JVC was signed by K. Ravi Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director, BHEL and S Machindranathan, Chairman, TNEB in the presence of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veeraswamy.

The JVC has been set up for the execution of the first 2x800 mwsupercritical thermal power project in the State, with principal equity stake from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and TNEB. The first unit of the project is expected to commence from March, 2012 and the second in September 2012.

The land for the project (760 acres)in Tiruchendur taluk of Tuticorin district has already been identified.
