Rawat for Penalising Teachers Who Don't Teach

DEHRADUN: Expressing unhappiness over a 10 per cent dip in?board results of government schools in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Harish Rawat said non-performing teachers should be penalised.

Attributing the 10 per cent drop in pass percentage of state run schools to recklessness on part of teachers and education department officials, he said holding last year's natural calamity responsible for the poor board examination results was not fair.

Underlining the need to streamline things on the education front urgently, he said the policy of giving incentives to teachers who perform and penalising those who don't should be adopted.

The transfer policy regarding teachers should also be merit and performance based, the chief minister said while reviewing the performance of state's school education department here yesterday.

Announcing that transfer of teachers will depend on their attendance and performance, he said if teachers posted in schools in remote areas perform well for three to five years they will get a posting of their choice.

He also asked education department officials to inspect the schools periodically to ensure that teachers were doing their job properly.
