SRINAGAR: Opposition National Conference today said it would provide free legal assistance to the youths arrested during the ongoing unrest in the Valley.

"Legal cell of National Conference, in every district, will provide free legal assistance to the youths who were arrested and put behind bars on fictitious charges by the present government," party General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said.

Addressing members of the legal cell and party leaders in a meeting at National Conference headquarters here, he said the decision to provide legal aid to the arrested youths was part of party's effort to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with the masses.

He claimed an atmosphere of "lawlessness and jungle rule" was being created in the state and the people are feeling insecure due to "non-seriousness and inability" of the rulers.

Earlier, the meeting discussed in detail the prevailing political situation and the problems being faced by the people.

"The leaders highlighted the problems being faced by the people over the past 52 days due to curfew, restrictions, atrocities and arrests in their respective areas," a statement issued by the party said.

They expressed their condolences to those who were killed due to "excessive use of force" and prayed for speedy recovery of those injured during the unrest, it said.
