BJP wins Chhattisgarh civic body elections

RAIPUR: Fifty days after the demonetisation, the win at the Bhilai-Charoda and Sarangarh municipal elections came as a boost for the ruling BJP and Chief Minister Raman Singh in Chhattisgarh. The votes for the local body elections were cast on December 27.

Following the BJP’s recent victories in civic body polls — post-demonetisation —  in the parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Chandigarh, the ruling BJP in Chhattisgarh on Friday maintained the party’s winning streak capturing the mayoral post both in Bhilai-Charoda municipal corporation and Sarangarh municipality.

“BJP’s win in Bhilai-Charoda and Sarangarh civic elections is yet another public endorsement of PM Narendra Modi’s demonetisation drive,” Chief Minister Raman Singh tweeted after the results.

BJP’s Chandrakanta Mandle won the mayoral seat in Bhilai-Charoda defeating the Congress candidate Jyoti Banjare by a margin of over 4,000 votes.

Similarly, Amit Agrawal of the ruling party defeated Suraj Tiwari of Congress by 1,096 votes to win the Sarangarh mayor post.  The BJP won 16 seats in the 40-member civic body In Bhilai-Charoda, with Congress getting 13 and independents winning 11.
