PANAJI: BJP legislator Anant Shet was today elected as the Speaker of Goa Assembly defeating his rival Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco by 28 to 9 votes in the 40-member House.

The election for the Speaker's post, which had fallen vacant after resignation of BJP legislator Rajendra Arlekar following his induction in the Laxmikant Parsekar Cabinet, was held after the Question Hour in the ongoing Assembly session. Pro-tem Speaker Mauvin Godinho, who allowed the division of votes, declared Shet as the winner after 28 legislators voted in his favour, while opposition candidate Lourenco got only nine votes.

Arlekar, who was elected to the post of the Speaker on March 19, 2012 after BJP won the Assembly election, had resigned on October 1, 2015.
