One dead, five injured after explosion reported in north Delhi's Naya Bazar

Unconfirmed reports said material kept in a jute bag being carried by a passerby exploded, killing him.

NEW DELHI: An explosion in Naya Bazar near Chandni Chowk in north Delhi killed one person, injured two others and put the police of the national capital on terror alert today.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh, away in Bahrain, spoke to Delhi police commissioner Alok Verma about the explosion.

A senior police officer said the cause of the explosion was yet to be ascertained. Unconfirmed reports said material kept in a jute bag being carried by a passerby exploded, killing him. Another version had it that it was an explosion of Diwali crackers.

Forensic teams and officers from the Special Cell of the Delhi Police are on the spot and collecting samples.

Delhi Police have been maintaining a tight vigil in view of the festive season.
