BENGALURU: Divesting Digvijaya Singh of his charge as AICC general secretary in Karnataka and Goa, the Congress high command on Saturday appointed Kerala MP K C Venugopal in his place. Singh, whose poor performance in the February held Assembly elections prompted the move, still retains in charge of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Other members who have been assigned to look after Karnataka are AICC secretaries Manickam Tagore, P C Vishnunadh, Madhu Yashki Goud and Sake Saijananth for Karnataka. A Chellakumar has been appointed in charge of Goa affairs along with AICC Secretary Amit Deshmukh.

The axe was likely to fall on Digvijay Singh after the party failed to perform well and in Goa and then was defeated by the BJP in stitching a coalition to form the government.

Dissent against Digvijay Singh has grown louder in Karnataka in recent months, with several leaders and workers demanding another leader more in tune with State politics.
