CHANDIGARH: A first-of-its-kind border memorial will be established by 1947 Partition Archive at Sarhad Food and Culture Park, located two kilometres away from the Indo-Pak international border at Attari-Wagah.

This border memorial will be an educational counterpart to the famous Beating Retreat Ceremony held daily at the border, drawing crowds that average around 10,000 a day. The memorial will highlight and recreate the 1947 partition of the Wagah Border.

Talking with the New Indian Express, founder and executive director of the 1947 Partition Archive, Dr Guneeta Singh Bhalla, said, “We want to create an immersive experience that helps people feel the partition migration. We want people to understand what it was like to be alive at that time, and how their lives changed later on, through the stories of those who lived it and through cultural elements of that time.

We want to highlight the different experiences of people from all classes and all faiths. We want to bring the history of Wagah to life.”

The memorial is due to open to the public at the end of August. It will create awareness about the migration through different exhibits.
