GUWAHATI: The Tripura police have registered a suo motu case after a Facebook account, registered in the name of one Ria Roy, announced a bounty of Rs.5.5 lakh for anyone who would chop off the head of chief minister Manik Sarkar of the Left Front-ruled state.
A FIR in connection with the post was lodged by one Subrata Chakrabarty, who received the post from Roy. Chakraborty, a resident of Bardowali in Tripiura, suspects the post is the handiwork of a gang of criminals.
In the post, Ria Roy had identified herself as a member of the World Anti-Communist Council.
The post reads: “This person is the Chief Minister of Tripura state. He has numerous crimes to his credit. We issue FATWA on behalf of World Anti-Communist Council and announce a reward of Rs.5.5 LACS only for chopping down his head. Payment will be wire transferred to any bank A/c. Kindly provide bank details once the FATWA is executed.”
Ria Roy tagged a Bengali television channel and DTH news. The profile makes no reference to her profession or educational status. It carries the picture of a young girl though.
The police said they are investigating the case.
“We registered a case suo motu yesterday (Thursday) after the post came to our notice. There is a set procedure for such cases and we will try to find out who posted the message,” inspector-general (law and order) KV Sreejesh told New Indian Express.
Asked if Sarkar’s security would be enhanced, he said the chief minister already has Z Plus category security and in case it had to be enhanced would be decided by the committees which look into the security aspects of VIPs.
The CPM says it suspects the role of supporters of the BJP-RSS. “It’s a bogus post and as such, we are not giving much importance to it. It was possibly posted by elements close to the BJP-RSS,” CPM state secretary Bijan Dhar said.
