CHANDIGARH: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was on Monday sentenced to 20 years in jail for the rape of two sadhvis (female followers) back in 2002.

Special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh pronounced the sentence in a special court set up in the library of the Sunaria Jail in Rohtak, where Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been lodged since the guilty verdict was pronounced on Friday in Panchkula.

Wearing a white kurta pajama and white head cloth, Ram Rahim Singh stood in front of the judge with folded hands and requested leniency. He broke into tears upon hearing the 10 year sentence.

During the hearing, the prosecution demanded maximum  sentence, while the defence council pleaded for leniency, citing the social work done by Ram Rahim.

The judge was flown in a helicopter to conduct the proceedings. The Haryana police and paramilitary  forces are guarding the prison while the Army is on standby.
