NEW DELHI: The instant Triple Talaq Bill, cleared by the Union Cabinet on Friday, will be tabled in the ongoing Parliament session and is likely to get priority over other bills, government sources said.

Calling the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill “very important”, a senior government official told The New Indian Express that the proposed law was “certainly the government’s priority and would get preference over many other bills”. While clearing the Bill, the Cabinet said it would act as a “shield” for Muslim women and protect them from atrocities.

That the government is giving top priority to the Bill can be gauged from the fact that it has already submitted a list of more than 25 bills that are to be tabled in the ongoing Winter session.

Besides these 25 bills, the government also has a long list of pending bills which are not likely to be considered in the session.

They include the Constitution (SC and ST) Orders (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Inter-State River Water Disputes (Amendment) Bill, 2017, Lokpal and Lokayuktas and other related Law (Amendment) Bill, 2014, Whistle Blowers Protection (Amendment) Bill, 2015, Armed Forces Tribunal (Amendment) Bill, 2012, and Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Amendment Bill, 2017.
