After a series of Twitter accounts were hacked in 2016, it was the news agency Press Trust of India's handle that faced the first breach of security on the micro-blogging site in 2017.

On February 1 evening, the PTI verified twitter account showed some unusual non-news tweets, which indicated it had been hacked.

The first evidence of it was the change of PTI's Twitter profile picture to a symbol which read "Iran Crack security team". This was followed by a series of tweets which hinted at web links and hacking codes.

In contrast to the hacking of Rahul Gandhi, Barkha Dutt or Vijay Mallya's twitter accounts, which were carried out by a hacker group that calls itself 'Legion', there were no tweets in offensive or derogatory language posted on the hacked PTI feed.

After restoring their account, PTI posted an alert confirming the hack.
