SRINAGAR: The BSF on Tuesday foiled an infiltration attempt of militants in Keri sector of Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir by killing a militant from whose possession Pakistan-made items were recovered.

“During the intervening night of February 20/21, the border guards deployed on forward duty points along the LoC fence in Keri sector of Rajouri district observed suspicious movement of a group of 3-4 militants moving towards the fence,” a BSF official in Jammu told Express.

He said the BSF men alerted the nearby duty points and kept watch on the movement of the militants.

“As the militants approached the LoC fence, one of them tried to negotiate it to make way for infiltration to this side. The BSF men fired towards the militants,” the official said.

He said the militants also returned the fire from automatic weapons. “They also fired UBGL grenades towards the positions of BSF men. In the exchange of fire, a militant was killed at the fence while three others retreated back after taking the advantage of the darkness and undulating ground”.

According to the BSF official, the escaping militants were seen dragging one of their accomplices. “Either he was injured or killed in the gunfight”.

He said in the morning the border guards conducted thorough searches of the entire area.

“During the search operation, body of the slain militant was recovered,” the official said adding identity of the militant and the outfit to which he owes allegiance was being ascertained.

He said an AK-56 rifle, 16 AK magazines,  267 AK ammunition,  89 AK Series EFC, 1 radio Set, 1 binocular, 5  grenades, 3 wire cutters, 4 back pack bags, 2 IEDs,  1 AK Magazine-fitted with IED,  1 Knife, 48 pencil cells, 2 chargers, 4 walking sticks,  liquid material bottles for fire burning, 5 pairs of hand gloves , rain coat, jacket, bed sheet and survival items like dry fruits, juices and medicines were recovered from the area, where militant’s body was found.

The official said the medicines, dry fruits and juices recovered were Pakistan-made.  “The juice packages “Fruitily” are made in Karachi, Pakistan while the medicines were manufactured in Lahore Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works Private Limited, Lahore, Pakistan.”

He said had the BSF men not foiled the infiltration bid and killed the militant, the heavily armed militants could have caused havoc in the hinterland after crossing over to this side.

The BSF has successfully foiled 11 infiltration bids on International Border (IB) and 15 on Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region since November last year, he said.
