NEW DELHI: With the model code of conduct coming into effect in five states following the announcement of poll dates, the Ministry of Urban Development has approached the Election Commission (EC) to allow it to continue its advertisement campaign for the government’s flagship Swachh Bharat Mission.

In a letter to the poll panel, Senior Principal Secretary R K Srivastava and mission director Praveen Prakash have requested a no-objection certificate to carry on the ad campaign for the scheme, which aims to make India clean by October 2019.

The model code of conduct took effect in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur from January 4, the day Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced the Assembly poll schedule.
The elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases between February 11 and March 8. While Punjab and Goa will go to the polls together on February 4, Uttarakhand will vote on February 15 and Manipur in two phases,  on March 4 and 8, with counting to be held on March 11.

The ministry has been running various ad campaigns under the mission in all states on television, radio, print media and outdoor media such as hoardings and posters through the Directorate of Advertising and Publicity. The ministry is running two major campaigns, one aimed at effecting behavioural changes to stop open defecation and the other to make people aware of and participate in a survey that’s being conducted to rank 500 cities across on cleanliness.
