Urjit Patel to brief  Parliamentary Committee on demonetisation

Patel will brief the parliamentary panel about demonetisation and its impact on the economy and the steps taken by the central bank to deal with the cash crunch

NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India governor Urjit Patel on Wednesday is set to brief a Parliamentary standing committee on finance over the impact of demonetisation on the economy.
 
Senior bureaucrats, including Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das, Banking Secretary Anjuly Chib Duggal and Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, and top bank honchos like Chanda Kochhar of ICICI Bank and Usha Ananthasubramanian of Punjab National Bank are also set to appear before the committee headed by Congress leader Veerappa Moily.
 
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is one of its members. Apart from the impact of demonetisation, Patel will brief the parliamentary panel about the steps taken by the central bank to deal with the cash crunch post withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
 
The meeting will discuss the "demonetisation of Indian currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 and the impact thereof".
 
The RBI Governor is also scheduled to appear before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on the same issue on January 20.
 
Meanwhile, protests have erupted across the country at various offices of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by members of the Congress party against demonetisation.
 
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday demonstrated in front of the Reserve Bank of India office here as part of its nationwide RBI Gherao programme. Led by APCC president Ripun Bora, AICC general secretary C P Joshi and other party leaders, slogan shouting Congress members and supporters attempted to break the security barricade to enter inside the RBI gate.
 
Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) workers also took out a protest rally in front of the sub-office of the RBI.
