BHOPAL: As many as five men were allegedly electrocuted and then drowned in a 40-feet deep water well fitted with an electric motor pump in Maksudangarh area of Guna district on Sunday.

The incident happened in Raghunathpura village in Maksudangarh police station area at around 3 pm, when a 45-year-old farmer Dayaram Lodhi climbed down into his well to repair a defective electric motor pump.

Not knowing that the defective electric motor pump had current running through it, Lodhi got electrocuted in the well and started drowning. Four other villagers, including Chote Lal (18), Ram Babu (24), Dhiraj (30) and Jagmohan (34) who one by one hastened into the well to rescue Lodhi and later each other, also were electrocuted before being drowned.

The cops from Maksudangarh police station rushed to the village when they got to hear about it and with the help of villagers retrieved the five bodies out of the well.

“All five bodies have been sent for autopsy, but prima facie it appears that they were first electrocuted and then drowned,” said Ashok Dube, the assistant sub inspector (ASI) at Maksudangarh police station.
