Beef row: BJP braces for more resignations in Garo Hills

The statement came in the wake of reports of another resignation, that of a BJP youth leader in the western Garo Hills region today.

SHILLONG: The BJP in Meghalaya today said the party is expecting more resignations in the Garo Hills region in the coming days over row over beef ban. "More people are expected to resign from the party in the coming days, especially in the Garo Hills, for their anti-party activities," state BJP general secretary Bashailang Khongwir told PTI.

He said people come and go and it is only democratic to let go and accept those who share the ideology of the party.

The statement came in the wake of reports of another resignation, that of a BJP youth leader in the western Garo Hills region today.

The Tura city BJP district youth president, Wilver Greham Danggo, resigned his post, according to reports. Danggo criticised the Centre's notification on cruelty to animals, which he termed "is focused" on the issue of cow slaughter. "Banning slaughter means banning beef, as we cannot eat beef without slaughtering the animals," he said in his resignation letter.

The state BJP leadership has, however, denied having any information with regards to Danggo's resignation. BJP state youth president Egenstar Kurkalang said he is yet to receive any letter from Danggo. Danggo's resignation will be the third in the Garo Hills after West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills district presidents put in their papers in the past week over the issue.

Both had posted on their respective Facebook pages that they will co-host a beef and bitchi (rice beer) party later this week in protest against the Centre's latest notification on cow slaughter.
