Two die in blast at Ammunition Factory Khadki near Pune

MUMBAI: Two people died and several others were injured in an explosion at the ordnance factory at Khadki near Pune on Thursday morning.

Defence sources said the explosion occurred while rejected ammunition was being shifted within the factory.

The ordnance facility, Ammunition Factory Khadki situated on the banks of the Mula river, manufactures ammunition for small arms.

The explosives being shifted were sensitive to even a slight change in temperature or pressure, an officer of the factory said.

The victims were identified as Ashok Kashinath (52) and Maria Rock (48). They succumbed to severe burn injuries, said an official statement released by the defence PRO.

The explosion did not cause any damage to the factory building.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated, the statement said.

In March, six people were killed in an explosion and a fire at the Ordnance Factory in Khamaria (OFK) in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh.
