SRINAGAR: Army on Sunday said the troops foiled a major infiltration bid of militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir by killing two militants.

Defence spokesman in Srinagar, Colonel Rajesh Kalia said army foiled a major infiltration bid of militants along the LoC in Uri sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district during the night intervening November 4/5.

He said the militants, who tried to infiltrate into this side by exploiting difficult terrain conditions, were intercepted by the alert army men close to the LoC.

“On being challenged, the militants resorted to indiscriminate firing on the troops. The fired was returned by the troops and in the ensuing firefight, two militants were killed,” the spokesman said.

He said large quantity of arms and ammunition and other warlike stores were recovered from the slain militants.

Another army official said troops launched a search operation in the area close to the LoC to ensure that none of the infiltrating militants may have managed to sneak into this side during the gunfight.

He said the search operation was going on when last reports poured in.

However, J&K Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said troops foiled the action of notorious Border Action Team (BAT) of Pakistani troops.

“BAT action bid was foiled by Army and J&K police at Dulanja, Uri. Two militants were killed in the gunfight,” Vaid tweeted.

He said a possible tragedy was averted there was no casualty on this side.

Surprising, the J&K police is not deployed at the LoC or International Border (IB) in the State. The LoC and IB in the State is being manned by the army and BSF men.

An army official, however, said it was an infiltration bid and not a BAT attack.

“Initially, it was thought that it was a BAT attack. However, later it became clear that it was not a BAT attack but an infiltration attempt by militants from across the LoC,” he said.

He said it was the fourth infiltration attempt foiled by troops in Uri sector in last five months.

“This displays the alertness and resilience of the soldiers, who engaged and neutralized the militants and resulting in foiling these infiltration attempts in Uri sector,” the official said.
