SRINAGAR: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant and an Army man were killed and a policeman injured in an encounter in volatile south Kashmir’s Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
The police, Central Reserve Police Force and Army officials launched a combing and search operation in Nowbug Kund area of Kulgam early on Tuesday after they received information about the presence of Hizbul Mujahideen militants there, said a police official.
The security personnel zeroed in on the area, where the militants were hiding, after plugging all the entry and exit points, the officer said. “The militants were asked to surrender, but they fired from automatic weapons. The troops returned fire, triggering an encounter,” he said.
SP Pani, Deputy Inspector General, south Kashmir, told The New Indian Express that the injured policeman has been hospitalised and his condition is said to be stable. The operation has not been called off yet, Pani said.
Police sources said the security forces had information regarding three to four militants hiding in the area. “Since only one militant has been killed, the rest may have escaped,” they said.
The slain militant was identified as Mudasir Badroo, a resident of Yaripora in Kulgam. Though some reports said Mudasir was a B Tech graduate, Pani ruled out this. “He may have done some diploma course, but not BTech,” the DIG said, adding that Mudasir had joined militancy in 2015.
Authorities snapped internet services in Kulgam and adjoining Anantnag district after the incident.
The security forces had also launched a cordon and search operation in Laam forest area of Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Tuesday following reports about presence of militants there. “The security personnel fired several rounds in the air during the search. However, there was no response from militants. The operation was called off after no contact was established with them,” a police official said.
On Monday, the security forces had shot dead two local Hizbul Mujahideen militants during a brief encounter at Zachaldara in Handwara of Kupwara district.
