NEW DELHI: The Centre on Friday backed the appointment of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special director R K Asthana before the Supreme Court saying he is a meritorious officer and has investigated various scams, including the coal scam.

Responding to contentions raised in the PIL filed by NGO Common Cause, Attorney General K K Venugopal said Asthana was appointed after taking every decision-making authority on board, and claims that CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma has expressed reservation is wrong. “Asthana’s selection was totally unanimous.

There was no dissent,” Venugopal told a bench headed by Justices R K Agrawal and A M Sapre, who reserved the verdict till November 28.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan appeared for the NGO and had alleged that Asthana had a close nexus with some companies under CBI probe.
