RAIPUR: The burglars entered the branch of State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday night breaking open locks of shutter, remained inside for over 32 hours, cut the cables of CCTV cameras, had food, relaxed, used washrooms and emptied around 15 lockers and managed to flee from the bank premises, located barely two kilometre away from the Vidhan Sabha.

The bank officials and the police claimed the burglars succeeded in their plan since there has been no security guard deployed at the bank, which angered the shocked customers who thronged the bank on
Monday.

The bank officially remained closed on Saturday and Sunday, and the burglars managed to enter through the main entrance door but no one noticed them as they “cautiously put down the shutter”.

“It’s terrible the number one nationalised bank of the country is so callous in ensuring the security. The savings of my 35 years of my service which was kept in the locker of the SBI in the form of jewellery and other items had all gone. I will perhaps never get it back. My wife has gone into depression”, the principal secretary of the Chhattisgarh assembly Devendra Verma told the New Indian Express.

It’s not possible for anyone to actually know the exact value of what were looted from the bank but it might easily run into several crores.

According to the bank officials the burglars entered the bank by breaking open the locks of main shutter. They carried with them the gas cutter and break open 15 lockers inside inside the strongroom. Besides decamping with the whatever they could found in the 15 lockers, the burglars took away over Rs 9 lakh from the safe. There are 56 lockers in the bank.

The burglary was discovered on Monday morning when the staffers reached the bank. The clueless police are taking help of forensic experts and the sniffer dog squad in their investigation.
