NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the revision of pay scales for about 7.58 lakh teachers and other academic staff in higher educational institutions under the University Grants Commission (UGC) and in centrally funded technical institutions.“In addition, the revised pay package will cover teachers of 119 centrally funded technical institutions — IITs, IISc, IIMs, IISERs, IIITs and NITIE,” an official statement said.

Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the idea was to do justice to faculty members in higher education institutions. “We need to attract talent and give good salaries to our teaching staff and to retain them,” he told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.

The minister said the faculty at Central government’s institutes and universities would get the benefit immediately but teachers at higher education institutions run by states may have to wait a bit.
“For state government-funded institutions, the revised pay scales will require adoption by the respective state governments,” the statement said. The Centre will, however, bear the additional burden of the states on account of revision of pay scales.
