Army porter killed, girl injured in Pakistan firing in Jammu and Kashmir

The latest ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops took place on the day when Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was on a day-long visit to Jammu.

SRINAGAR: An army porter was killed and a girl injured as Pakistani troops breached the border ceasefire and fired on army positions and civilian areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

An army official said Pakistani troops breached border ceasefire along LoC in Kamalkote area of Uri sector in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district today.

He said the Pakistani troops without any provocation resorted to unprovoked firing on army positions and civilian areas along the LoC from 11.30 am.

The army men also returned the fire from similar calibre weapons and both sides exchanged heavy gunfire for more than an hour.

The official said an army porter was killed in Pakistani troops firing.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Abbas.

The official said an 18-year-old girl was also injured in Pakistani troops firing.

The girl identified as Nasreena Bano of Marian village near LoC was shifted to Government Hospital Baramulla for specialised treatment.

The latest ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops took place on the day when Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was on a day-long visit to Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

It also comes two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi accompanied by army chief visited LoC in Gurez sector to spend Diwali with the men and officers of army and BSF.

While saluting the soldiers guarding the borders, PM had said, "Our forces protect our motherland with utmost valour, displaying highest traditions of sacrifice and dedication". 

There has been a surge in ceasefire violations by Pakistan this year:

On October 18, eight civilians including a two-year-old girl were injured in Pakistani troops firing nd mortar shelling along the LoC in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in J&K.

On October 12, an army man and a porter were killed in Pakistani troops firing  in Poonch sector.

On October 2, two children including a girl were killed and 12 others injured in Pakistani troops  mortar shelling in Poonch sector.

On September 20, an army man was killed in Pakistani troops firing in Keran sector of border district of Kupwara.

On September 17,  a woman was killed and five others injured in  cross-border firing and mortar shelling along IB in Arnia sector.

On September 15, BSF constable was killed and a civilian injured in Pakistani troops firing in the Arnia sector.
