Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru were ‘garbage’: Assam BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tassa

GUWAHATI: Assam BJP MP, Kamakhya Prasad Tassa, has triggered a storm by allegedly equating Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi with garbage.

The Opposition Congress on Sunday filed an FIR with the police against him demanding his arrest.

“The MP from Jorhat Lok Sabha seat….described Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi as garbage. Therefore, we seek his immediate arrest and prosecution under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC),” reads the copy of FIR lodged with the police in Guwahati.

Speaking at a public rally at Sonari in eastern Assam’s Charaideo district on Saturday, Tassa had allegedly said, “The Congress washed the brains of people with garbage like Gandhi and Nehru without knowing the ideologies of (RSS ideologue) Deendayal Upadhaya”.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal was seated on the podium as the MP was going about with his jibe.

The BJP, which heads the state’s three-party coalition government, had drawn censure recently from opposition parties, particularly the Congress, and various organisations by naming some colleges after Deendayal Upadhaya.

The protestors viewed the government’s decision as a design to promote Hindutva in the state.
During protests staged in Guwahati on Sunday, irate Congress workers burnt the effigies of Tassa demanding his arrest and removal as MP. Kamakhya Prasad Tassa is an Adivasi, a community that represents the tea estate workers, and a first timer in the Lok Sabha.
