NEW DELHI: A director of a Delhi-based real estate firm was today sent to judicial custody for two weeks in a corruption case in which cricketer Munaf Patel is also an accused.
Metropolitan Magistrate Manisha Tripathy allowed the police plea seeking judicial custody for Rahul Chamola, director of accused company Nivas Promoters Pvt Ltd, for 14 days after the probe agency said though he was not required for custodial interrogation, he may tamper with the evidence and threaten witnesses if set free.
The agency alleged that Tripathy was previously involved in a cheating case, besides the registered office disclosed by him was yet to be investigated.
The police also alleged that while the company had not yet paid its dues to the Greater Noida Authority, Tripathy has also not cooperated in the probe as he did not give details of the shareholders, minutes of the meetings of the company.
Chamola was arrested on September 19 after which a court had sent him to two-day police custody on a complaint alleging that the accused persons had cheated a Delhi resident Sunil Kumar Aggarwal of crores of rupees which were used in cricket betting and match-fixing.
The complaint claimed that he had paid money for flats in the accused company's Greater Noida housing project -- Oneleaf Troy, complainant's lawyer Vijay Aggarwal, said.
The deal was later cancelled and the accused handed him over several cheques to pay back money which, however, got dishonoured.
The complainant has also filed a separate cheque bounce case against Chamola, Patel and others and the court has already summoned the cricketer who is one of the directors of Nivas Promoters.
