SHILLONG: The BSF today apprehended one person for illegally trying to cross over the international border in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district, officials said.

The BSF troops apprehended the person while he was returning from Bangladesh after visiting his relatives at Purbadhala village in Bangladesh, BSF spokesperson U K Nayal said.

The apprehension was made following an extra vigil along the Indo-Bangladesh border post Ronghiya crisis along the Bangla-Myanmarese border, Nayal said.

"Due to the recent disturbing Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh, the International border of Meghalaya has been kept under effective surveillance and alert to avert any movement of illegal infiltrators at the International border," he said.

Meanwhile, yesterday 15 cows were seized from Umsyiem village in East Khasi Hills district in a special operation by the BSF teams, he said.

The special operation party of BSF laid a trap while some smugglers along with cattle were proceeding towards Bangladesh through a thickly vegetated area and seized the cows, he said.
