The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday diffused the brewing political crisis in Jammu & Kashmir by handing over the resignations of two of its ministers – Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga – to chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.

The duo had courted controversy by attending a rally supporting those accused of raping and killing an eight-year-old girl in Kathua.

Mufti welcomed the move but said the Centre should “wake up to the Kashmir cauldron”.

Earlier in the day, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav held consultations with senior party leaders as well as MLAs and MLCs. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Madhav conceded the two ministers displayed lack of discretion by taking part in the rally.

‘Horrific’, says UN, CM gets cracking

“I think we’ve seen the media reports of this horrific case, of the abuse and the murder of a young girl. We very much hope that the authorities will bring the perpetrators to justice,” said United Nations chief

Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson

J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti requested the J&K HC to set up a special fast track court to complete the trial in the Kathua case in 90 days. Accused cops were sacked
