BHOPAL: Marrying her love against the wishes of family has turned out to be a nightmare for a young girl and her husband in tribal dominated Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh.

The young couple Ramesh alias Hitesh (21) and Nankibai (19) were tortured beyond imagination by Nankibai’s family in Hardaspur village under Ambua police station area on July 25.

The couple was kidnapped at gunpoint from the house of the girl’s uncle at around 4 am on July 25, before being taken to the house of the girl’s parents. While Ramesh was tied to a pole outside the house of the girl’s parents and thrashed badly, the girl too was beaten by her father and uncles and her head was tonsured as punishment, before she was stripped partially outside the house.

Both Ramesh and Nankibai were subsequently forced to consume urine by the accused. The accused subsequently set the young couple free, after telling them that the torture was punishment to the girl and her husband for marrying against the wishes of the girl’s parents.

“A case has been registered under Sections 147, 148, 454 and 354 of IPC against six men, including the girl’s father and uncles following a complaint by the young couple. Two of the accused have been arrested,” said Ambua police station in-charge Vikas Kapis on Tuesday.

According to unconfirmed sources, Nankibai’s parents are very powerful in Hardaspur village. While her mother Durabai is a village sarpanch, father Keramsingh is a local leader of ruling BJP.

Two and half months back, the couple had eloped and married each other against the wishes of girl’s parents. Both of them were subsequently brought before a tribal panchayat, which had slapped Rs 70,000 vadhu-mulya (penalty on Ramesh’s family).

But despite, Ramesh’s kin paying the penalty along with two he-goats as dictated by the tribal panchayat two months back, the girl’s parents didn’t accept the marriage. The young couple had returned to Alirajpur district recently after working as labourers in adjoining Gujarat.
