RAIPUR: Santosh Patre, driver of a private bus suffered heart attack while at high speed in Chhattisgarh's Kawardha district but managed to safely stop the bus that skidded off the road into the agriculture field. A major tragedy was staved off as the driver struggling with scathing chest pain halted the bus and saved the lives of over 40 passengers before he collapsed on the wheel owing to an apparent cardiac arrest.

According to the police, the packed bus was on its way from Kawardha to Durg. "While the bus was moving on highway near Sahaspur Lohara, the driver suffered a severe pain in his chest, felt nauseous and was about to lose control.

He managed the quickly slow down the bus moving at high speed. The bus went off the road and stopped some metres away in the agriculture field, none of the passengers sustained any injury", the police said.

Chief Minister Raman Singh expressed his grief over the death of the bus driver owing to cardiac arrest but praised his wisdom and timely action that averted a major incident and saved the lives of passengers. He gave Rs one lakh as immediate relief to his family who stayed at Atal Awas colony Kawardha district.
