MUMBAI: Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of Congress in Lok Sabha has been appointed as the party's general secretary in-charge of Maharashtra. He shall replace Mohan Prakash, who ceases to be a party general secretary, party officials have said.

"The party appreciates the hardwork and contribution of Mohan Prakash who will be stepping down from his responsibilities as the General Secretary and AICC in-charge of Maharashtra," AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot said in a statement.

The party also appointed three AICC secretaries for Maharashtra. They include Sonal Patel from Gujarat, Ashish Dua from Haryana and Sampath Kumar from Telangana. They shall replace Shyoraj Jivan Valmiki and Bala Bachchan.

While there had been a discontent against Mohan Prakash in the party, party insiders said that he has been made a scapegoat for the party's poor show in the recent Lok Sabha by poll at Palghar. Contrary to popular advise of forging an alliance Mohan Prasad allegedly pushed for giving a candidate who could hardly fetch around 50,000 votes and the party stood distant fourth.
