MUMBAI/NASHIK: Eight people, including seven women, were today killed and eight others injured when the multi-utility vehicle they were travelling in collided with a State Transport bus on the busy Mumbai-Agra Road near Nashik, police said.

The accident happened at around 11am today after the tyre of the MUV burst at Shirvada Phata and it rammed into an ST bus coming from the opposite direction, Sanjay Darade, Superintendent of Police said.

The MUV, carrying people who were going to attend a marriage ceremony, was moving towards Nashik from Dhule while the bus was headed towards Satara, the SP said.

"The driver lost control of the vehicle after its tyre burst and collided with the ST bus," Darade said.

An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered at Vadner Bhairav Police Station in this case, he said.

A Vadner Bhairav police official identified the deceased as Dhanubai Kakulte (65), Ratna Gangurde (45), Tejashree Shinde (17), Krishnabai Shinde (55), Saraswatibai Jagtap (66), Shobha Pagare (35), Siddheshwari More (14) and Ajay Gangurde (46).

He said that deceased Ajay Gangurde was the drive of the MUV.

He added that further probe into the incident was underway, the SP said.
