In the wake of the ongoing infighting in the country's top investigation agency, PM Modi on Monday summoned CBI Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana.
The CBI has named its own Rakesh Asthana as an accused of accepting a Rs 2 crore bribe to settle meat exporter Moin Qureshi’s case. Apart from Asthana, the CBI has also named RAW number two Samant Kumar Goel in the FIR. Goel has been accused of facilitating the deal between Asthana and Qureshi. The FIR was filed on October 15 and one Manoj, who allegedly transferred the bribe, was arrested the following day.
Earlier in his letters addressed to the the Cabinet Secretary and Central Vigilance Commission, Asthana had alleged 10 cases of corruption and irregularities against CBI chief Alok Verma, levelling serious corruption charges in some of them.
One of the case pertains to Sathish Sana, a businessman facing probe in a corruption case involving meat exporter Moin Qureshi. Asthana had also alleged that Verma delayed his team's request to arrest Sana in the case.
The case also brings to the fore the divide in the CBI.
Qureshi was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in August last year. According to the agency, he was arrested under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and he was not cooperating in the probe. The meat exporter has been accused of laundering money for a host of public servants.
