GUWAHATI: AN IPS officer, serving as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Nagaland Police, has been placed under suspension for his alleged involvement in illegal narcotics trade.

Richard Yimto, the accused IGP, has been asked not to leave the police headquarters (PHQ) in Kohima without obtaining prior permission.

On August 3, personnel of the Narcotics Cell had seized brown sugar, weighing 6.9 kg, at a check-post bordering Manipur. The seizure should have entered the official records but it was not done. Also, two persons were released and no criminal case was registered.

When the PHQ learnt about the lapses on August 25, the Director General of Police (DGP) ordered a probe through an ADGP. On September 1, the seized contraband was recovered from the official quarter of the accused cop.

The probe report said Yimto had "flouted all due processes of law". Nagaland's Home Commissioner, Abhijit Singh, in a statement, said no general diary reference was made as regards the confiscation of the contraband. The protocols flouted also included not registering a criminal case, releasing the two drugs carrier and the car and keeping the contraband in the personal custody and not in the malkhana of Narcotic Cell.
