CBI Special Director bribery case: Complainant moves SC seeking protection

NEW DELHI: Hyderabad-based businessman Satish Sana on Monday approached the Supreme Court seeking police protection and a stay on a notice issued by the agency summoning him for interrogation. It was on Sana’s complaint that an FIR was registered against CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana.

The investigating agency had booked Asthana on October 15 on the basis of a complaint from Satish Sana, who is facing a probe in a 2017 case involving meat exporter Moin Qureshi, claiming that the special director had allegedly helped him get a clean chit from CBI.

In his petition, Sana said he feared for his life and sought police protection during the pendency of the inquiry against Asthana, who, along with CBI Director Alok Verma, has been divested of his duties and sent on leave.

Sana, who was summoned by CBI for attending the proceedings on October 29, said that the same be recorded before Justice Patnaik.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Monday slammed the Centre and CBI for failing to file a reply on Asthana’s plea seeking quashing of an FIR against him. Justice Najmi Waziri extended the interim protection from arrest granted to Asthana until November 1.

The court’s direction came on Asthana’s plea seeking an extension of the status quo order and a direction to CBI not to take coercive steps against him.

The court suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Devender Kumar’s pleas seeking quashing of FIRs.
Seeking more time to file its response, the CBI told the court that the team probing the case against Asthana had been changed.
