SRI NAGAR: Resentment is brewing in Jammu and Kashmir Congress after former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad was sidelined in key election committees of the State by the Congress high command.

The Congress president Rahul Gandhi on February 7 approved formation of the Coordination Committee, Pradesh Election Committee, Campaign Committee, Publicity Committee and Media Co-ordination Committee for the J&K Pradesh Congress.

In three vital committees, Azad, who is being seen as party’s Chief Ministerial candidate, has been virtually sidelined and ‘cut to size’.

The State Congress chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir has been named chairperson of the election committee and the campaign committee while Ambika Soni was named chairperson of the coordination committee.

In the coordination committee headed by Soni, Azad’s name figured on 4th place behind GA Mir and State Congress leader Rigzin Jora. In the Election and Campaign Committees, Azad’s name figures at third place behind GA Mir and Jora.

The sidelining of Azad has angered a section of State Congress leaders, who are close to the former chief minister. They are also not happy over non inclusion of Azad loyalists in the three committees.

“Azad is a former chief minister and the party’s face in the State. He is the only State Congress leader, who has got popularity in all three regions of J&K and can attract crowd and pull voters towards the party,” said a Congress leader, who is Azad loyalist. He said sidelining of Azad is not good for the party.
