SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police came under flak on Sunday after a video showing two policemen manhandling and dragging a woman in Shopian district surfaced on social media on Sunday. A senior officer said that a probe had been ordered into the incident.
In the 15-second video, which could not be verified for authenticity, the two policemen can be seen manhandling the woman and then dragging her across the compound of her house. The incident allegedly took place in Shadab Karewa village of the district during a raid by security forces on Saturday night.
Within hours of its appearance on the internet, citizens expressed their outrage at the behaviour. The public outcry led the police to launch an investigation into the matter.
A police spokesman said a police party had gone to the house to conduct a raid after a villager had complained that her 15-year-old daughter was abducted by two people from Shadab Karewa.
“During the raid on the house, police found the two accused present there. As policemen tried to arrest the accused, other family members including the women resisted and attacked the police party. They tried to block the policemen on duty and during the process, the accused managed to escape,” he said.
The spokesman, however, said an inquiry had been ordered to examine the conduct of the policemen on duty.
