Anti-depressant drug Alprax, a near-empty strip of which was recovered from the hotel room of Sunanda Pushkar, was not among the medicines prescribed by Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here where she underwent treatment just days before her death.

Investigators had recovered an empty strip of Alprax from Sunanda’s hotel room in New Delhi and the post-mortem report had also indicated the possibility of a drug overdose.

Sunanda had undergone treatment in KIMS from January 12 to 14 during which she underwent many diagnostic tests. The discharge summary of Sunanda from KIMS, accessed by Express, clearly states: ‘’Currently, (the) patient is not taking any medicines.’’

However, Sunanda, who complained of pain in the joints, was examined by a rheumatologist who diagnosed that she suffered from Sjoren’s Syndrome which causes symptoms including arthritis and Overlap Syndrome (an auto-immune disease affecting connective tissue). The rheumatologist then prescribed the following tablets: Etoshine (for pain and inflammation), HCQS (for rheumatic problems) and Pantocid-HQ (for stomach acidity control) for the next seven days.

It is to be noted that Alprax was not in the list. “When we asked the patient about the medicines she took, she said she was not under any medication. However, it is not clear whether Alprax was prescribed for her earlier by other hospitals or whether she took it without prescription,’’ said a specialist doctor in KIMS.

The discharge summary also says that Sunanda told doctors in KIMS that she suffered from lupus - a disorder of the immune system that can affect virtually any organ of the body. She came to the conclusion after undergoing tests in multiple countries.

Briefing the press on Saturday, KIMS vice-chairman and director G Vijayaraghavan had said that Sunanda did not suffer from any “life-threatening diseases’’.

However, he did not reveal that Sunanda suffered from lupus as it was yet to be established in the diagnostic tests by KIMS. Besides, hospital authorities were of the view that medical details need not be divulged to protect patient confidentiality.

The discharge summary also revealed that she was supposed to have follow-up in cardiology, rheumatology and neurology as an out-patient.
