The family of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, arrested on visa fraud charges in New York and released on a bond on Friday, said their former housekeeper went to authorities when her attempt to ‘extort’ money failed.

Devyani’s father Uttam Khobragade, a retired IAS officer, said that their former housekeeper Sangeeta Richards had through some people made demand for $10,000 and also wanted to facilitate her permanent stay in the US.

“We were ready to pay the sum, however, we declined to fulfill her demand to facilitate her stay in the US as it would be illegal to do so,” said Khobragade.

He added that his daughter was intentionally arrested while she was at her daughter’s school to ‘humiliate and embarrass’ despite the injunction of the Delhi High Court.

Devyani is facing charges of visa fraud and paying less than what had been declared before the US immigration authorities to her domestic servant Richards, who had brought in from India in 2012.

“In a petition filed by us, the Delhi High Court in an interim injunction had restrained Richards from instituting any action or proceedings against Devyani outside India on terms of the conditions of her employment,” said Khobragade.
