The autopsy report of Sunanda Pushkar, wife of Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, indicated drug overdose as the cause of her death. The report was submitted to Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Alok Sharma on Monday.

Sources in Delhi Police, while ruling out any foul play, said some injury marks found on her body were not fatal, but evidence suggest she may have consumed over 25 anti-depressant tablets within a few hours.

“We are waiting for the SDM report before taking any further action in this case,” police sources said, adding that two strips of alprozalem were recovered from her room and it was mostly empty. It was later handed over to Sharma, who is conducting inquest proceeding under Section 176 of CrPC.

A team of three senior doctors, headed by Dr Sudhir Gupta of Forensic Sciences Department of the AIIMS, had conducted the autopsy. Dr Gupta had claimed it was a case of sudden unnatural death.

Sharma, while refusing to divulge the details of the autopsy report, said his inquiry would conclude the reason for the death and future action would be taken on that. Sharma also said he would look into the autopsy report and corroborate statements of friends and relatives, including Tharoor, before coming to a final conclusion.

“On this basis I will conclude what was the cause of the death and submit a report to the police whether a case should be made out and whether police should carry out further investigation,” Sharma added.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said he has asked the investigators to expedite the probe into Sunanda’s death.

“He (Tharoor) has written to me for an expeditious probe. I have already talked to the people concerned and they are doing it,” Shinde said.

Tharoor, in his letter to the Home Minister on Sunday, had requested an expeditious probe, saying he was horrified to read the reckless speculation in the media.
