Four miners died inside a coal pit when it caved in in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place in Garegittim, about 400 km from Shillong.

"Four people died inside a coal pit after it caved in. Three of the bodies have been retrieved from the coal pit," district police chief Davis Marak told IANS.

The miners who have been identified were Ratna Barman, 38, Debokantho Barman, 32, and Bishwanath Barman, 30.

The body of the fourth miner, Piterson Marak, is yet to be retrieved, police said.
