In a bid to shore up economic ties with South-East Asian countries, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will travel to Brunei and Indonesia this week to attend the ASEAN Summit.

Ahead of the four-day visit that begins on October 9, Ministry of External Affairs’s Secretary (east) Ashok Kantha said that the “legal scrubbing” of the India-Asean free trade agreement in services and investments had been completed.

“We believe it can be (signed) in 2013 after the countries complete their internal procedures,” he told reporters. During his visit to Brunei Darussalam, the PM will attend the Asean-India Summit, as well as the East Asia summit. On the sidelines, he will meet with newly-elected Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. India and Australia will hold their third round of negotiations to reach an understanding on the supply of Uranium in December.
