Renowned nuclear scientist Sekhar Basu, Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, was conferred the Padma Shri award by President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi.

Basu, an alumni of University of Mumbai, joined BARC in Kalpakkam in 1998 and was responsible for commissioning of Land-based Nuclear Submarine Propulsion plant there. He was one of the few to develop 80 MWt compact pressurised water reactor, which would power 'Arihant', the country's nuclear powered submarine, an official release said.
