Considering the present scheme of events, it would be in the fitness of things for the legal luminaries and constitutional experts of our country to sit down and explore in right earnest, possibilities from increasing the number of seats in the Parliament and Assemblies, to creation of more number of wards in every locality, pardon the slip, in every lane, making related amendments to the Constitution, Representation of People Act and other related Acts and Rules and drafting of necessary measures.

This should be done so that considering the population of our country and the rightful aspirations of the majority, adequate opportunity is given to every Indian citizen: from becoming a ward councillor to making it big in state or national politics, for planning their career progression and realising their ambition of ultimately becoming a lawmaker.

Entering politics is undoubtedly the best bet before the youth of this country today. One need not be a professionally qualified accountant for zeroing in on a satisfying and rewarding career; even a layman can tell, without doing a cost-benefit-analysis that it pays rich dividends to become a politician in this country and that too with bare minimum investment than to blindly go for the traditionally sought after courses like engineering, medicine etc.

Politicians will vehemently declare and swear by the Constitution to serve the people when embarking upon their political career while secretly nurturing their hidden agenda. How else can one decipher the character of these service-minded people who manage to have hundreds of acres of land in their name and hold crores of hard currency in their homes, not to talk of the luxury cars they own or the investments in various available avenues, when the common man struggles to acquire bare minimum land for a reasonable shelter.

From foreign jaunts to stay in luxury holiday resorts, everything is offered on a silver platter to a politician. What more can one yearn for? It is meaningless to be dogmatic, in fact it pays to be practical. At the end of the day, what you have is what counts. Laws are meant to be bent, tailored to suit your requirement and that can be achieved when you are the law-maker.

Small wonder that MPs and MLAs flex their muscles quite often to have their way, for they know members of their ilk, regardless of party affiliations under the ‘you scratch my back and I will scratch yours’ policy, will step in to bail them out. All this is what long years of experience after Independence has taught us. But the Modi era promises to be radically different, progressive and result-oriented. Only time will tell.
