Brussels, Dec 5 (AFP) The European Union today warned ofpossible "serious repercussions" if US President Donald Trumpdecides to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and movethe US embassy there.

Trump yesterday delayed a decision on the highlycontentious issue - a crucial question in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - after public warnings from allies andprivate phonecalls between world leaders.

The EU, which supports a two-state solution to theconflict, warned against doing anything that would jeopardisethe peace process.

"Since early this year, the European Union was clear inits expectation that there can be reflection on theconsequences that any decision or unilateral action affectingJerusalem's status could have," EU diplomatic chief FedericaMogherini's office said in a statement.

"It might have serious repercussions on public opinion inlarge parts of the world," it added.

"The focus should therefore remain on the efforts torestart the peace process and avoiding any action that wouldundermine such efforts."Trump has yet to make his final decision, US officialshave said, but he is now expected to stop short of moving theembassy to Jerusalem - though he may still recognise the cityas Israel's capital.

Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as theircapital and previous peace plans have stumbled over debates onwhether, and how, to divide sovereignty or oversee holy sites.

The 28-nation EU said it would "continue to engage withboth parties and its international and regional partners" tosupport a resumption of a meaningful peace process. (AFP)MRJ.
